Chapter Twelve: Stranger Danger

The weather had warmed a little, melting some of the snow and leaving a pleasant piney scent in the air. Though Lane knew it was still months and months until spring, he could almost taste the first edge of it with each breath.

He was thankful for the break in the weather as he smoothed his gloves over the healing palms of his hands. Recess duty in the bitter cold was even less fun than usual. Lane watched one of Mrs. Hassett's sixth graders head for the slide at a run.

"Slow down, Bradley!"

The boy didn't acknowledge Lane's shout, but he did drop from a dead run to a jog, his breath puffing out in big white plumes.

Lane looked for Aeron, but the white wolf was nowhere to be seen. So far, they'd managed to stay out of sight, though he knew they were there. Somewhere.

He had been nervous all day, constantly glancing out his classroom windows, jumping every time the door opened. But nothing happened. Not the night before, when he'd finally allowed himself to return to the estate, or on his way in this morning.

Lane was beginning to think Jared had overstated the danger he was in. Or overestimated the wolf responsible, perhaps. He scanned the rest of the playground, keeping an eye out for any non-werewolf related problems.

Thanks to their diligent maintenance and grounds department, the space was relatively clear of snow and ice, allowing the children to access all of the equipment and the small kickball diamond.

However, shoveled snow was piled up against the chain-link fence in places, making it easy for one of the kids to scale it if they chose. They were back far enough off the main road that traffic wasn't much of a worry, but the north side of the playground faced the high school parking lot and he'd seen more than one newly licensed driver peeling out from there.

On the east side of the fence was the trail that led to the upper field, where the high school soccer team played. And, beyond that, woods. Lane knew from talking to his colleagues that some of the high schoolers hung out there when skipping classes, to smoke. The younger kids often wanted to explore. They heard most of the same rumors the teachers did.

Gabe Proctor caught a wayward ball and tossed it back to the kids as he strolled over to Lane.

Gabe was about Lane's height, with thinning brown hair and a bit of softness around his midsection. He taught fifth grade science and wore sweaters that looked very scratchy and a bit too small, but he was a nice guy. He always had a smile for Lane, and from what Lane had heard, the kids loved his classes.

He was smiling now and rubbing his bare hands together.

"Damn cold. I tried to convince Etienne to let us use the gym today."

Lane shrugged. It was chilly, but not that bad.

"I'm actually kind of enjoying it."

Gabe blinked at him, and then shook his head.
